Board Member
For the past 50 years, I served as a synagogue community rabbi, first in suburban Philadelphia [Tifereth Israel of Bucks County] and then in Northern New Jersey [Congregation Agudath Israel in Caldwell for 40 years]. In both settings, harnessing the creative powers of my lay leadership, I led communities to extraordinary growth and vitality. Indeed, I would describe my chosen style of rabbinic leadership as “a community builder.”
During that same span of time, I spent 50 periods of time in Israel. The State of Israel and the role of Israelis in the health of the Jewish people have always been central to my rabbinate. In 2020, my wife and I purchased a retirement apartment in Modiin across the Street from our son and daughter in law and four Israeli grandchildren.
I was privileged to serve the Jewish People beyond our shul community, in leadership positions spanning the Jewish Diaspora and Medinat Yisrael –
- President of the International Rabbinical Assembly [1994-6]
- President of Masorti Olami -World Council of Conservative Synagogues [1999-2005]
- Chair of the Board of the Masorti Israel Foundation [2010-2014]
- President of Mercaz Olami [2016-present]
Now in retirement, I have recommitted myself to promoting the role of community rabbi in Israel through the Honey Foundation. I could not think of a more appropriate and impactful next chapter of my career.
